Hey Marc. I totally agree with what you're saying. The post was designed to point out the legal implications of self defense, but that doesn't mean I agree with the law. I don't. Like you I think it is ridiculous that people are expected to consider all that crap in such a situation and that people are screwed over for trying to protect themselves against scum bags. I once had a solicitor tell me during a court case that involved my brother on an assault charge that my brother would have more of a chance if he had had a record. In other wards, the law is almost always on the side of the wrong-doers. My brother was only protecting himself, by the way. He broke a guys jaw and got a year in prison. For defending himself. That's how much the law is on your side.

Personally, I'll do what it takes to defend myself. I think it very unwise to consider the law in a self defense situation because it can cause you to hesitate or hold back and this will usually lead to defeat. I'm not saying you should go over board, but do what you have to do to stop the attack. Thanks for commenting. I checked out your site, by the way. Nice.

In practical terms (the law being what it is today), I would agree with you that there is responsibility that come with defending yourself. You have to guage your response to a level that will not send you to prison. That is a choice of practicality. But, I also happen to think that it is fairly ridiculous that at a moment in time when you could be fighting for your life (or that of your loved ones as well) that you should heve to consider that point. Lawyers make a great living planning strategies to keep people out of prison. As well, they have months to do it. You would have a fraction of a second in a self-defense scenario…and that is along with thnking about what to actually do to protect yourself. I think it is a very negative social comment that people have this concern in modern society. The concern that for successfully defending their life they could have it ruined. So, I guess you could say I agree with your post in practical terms…but, morally, I think you are justified in ALMOST any action you see as neccessary to protect yourself/loved ones at the moment of threat. And, as for those who might think your actions were extreme (if the aggressor is badly injured, killed, etc…) I would say if they were not in the danger or there to protect you from it…their opinion is not of much value.

Hey Mark. I agree that running away isn't always an option, not only for practical reasons. We are all human and sometimes we can't help getting drawn into these situations, can we? We know we should walk away but something always hold you back, rightly or wrongly. I guess it's easier to do that if you are prepared and you think you can handle the situation. If not, best just to run!

This is a that most martial artists have asked themselves at one time or another. The truth is, when a self defence situation is forced onto someone, sometimes running away is not an option. For instance if you are out with a group of freinds and a few drunken idiots decide to have a pop at you, it may not be possible for you all to run away and if one or two out of the group did run, there may be seen as unloyal and not true friends. I suppose what im getting at is that each self defence situation is different. If you can run away and are happy doing so, great, take the chance provided, but if you cant, make sure you are as best prepared as possible. great post!
