Here is a good example of self defense in action.
Below you will see the bruised and battered face of 22 year old burglar Gregory McCalium who got a lot more than he bargained for when he broke into the home of a 72 year old ex-army boxing champ.

McCalium broke into the home of Frank Corti in Oxford, England and threatened Mr.Corti and his wife with a knife.
Mr. Corti had this to say about the incident:
“I had to restrain him before he could go and get the knife. I was scared when he first threw the knife, but most people would have acted in the same way.
“If you can’t defend what’s yours, where are we at?”
Mr Corti, whose wife Margaret was also home at the time of the attack, received only minor injuries.
He added: “I shouted to my wife to ring the police. I was absolutely petrified.
“He was holding a knife which looked more like a six-bladed knuckleduster.
“He made a slashing movement at me but I dodged it by stepping back and he missed. As I saw it, it was a matter of do or die, so I let his wrists go.
“Fortunately the element of surprise was with me, so I adjusted my position and hit him with my right hand. It was just below the eye.
“I did not knock him out, but he was stunned. I heard the knife drop. We grappled. I was trying to drag him out of the
back door. We both fell to the floor.
“I had to subdue him by punching him, which I did not take a great deal of pleasure in.”
I have already defined what self defense is in a previous article but this story illustrates very well what it means to defend yourself in the eyes of the law. Mr.Corti and his wife were under threat from a man who entered their home uninvited and was wielding a knife. He did what he had to do to subdue the attack and no more. Mr. Corti did not put the man in a coma, nor did he kill him (things might have different if he did). He merely contained the situation until the police came.
Proper self defense in action.
Well done to Mr. Corti.
