Anyone who reads this blog will know that I am somewhat of a traditionalist when it comes to martial arts, but that does not mean I have a built in dislike for anything modern. On the contrary, I am all for bringing martial arts up to date and creating new and relevant concepts. The martial arts have to evolve like everything else in this world.
I have written a few articles that are very critical of MMA, not for it’s technique but for its very commercial nature, its thuggish attitude and dare I say it, lack of depth. I dislike MMA for those reasons, not because I am some staunch traditionalist who won’t hear tell of a bunch of upstarts daring to criticize my cherished traditions.
What works, works, and that’s all there is to it. I don’t care were a certain technique comes from or who devised what training method. None of that matters. What matters is how effective things are and that’s it.
At the end of the day people have their way of dealing with and responding to situations. As long as what you do works, it doesn’t matter what style it comes from.
So in the spirit of reconciliation I am recommending all of you read this article by Wim Demeere. It’s called “MMA Sucks, Traditional Martial Arts Suck More”, and it goes some way to clearing up the debate that has been raging between die hard traditionalists and MMA practitioners for some time now.
