Here’s something to thinks about.
It has been said that to master any technique you must perform that technique at least ten thousand times.
Given this, if you were to practice a particular technique say, twenty times in one session (bearing in mind that most classes cover quite a few techniques in a session, so for say, a throw, twenty times is a fair amount of reps) three times a week that amounts to sixty reps in one week.
This amounts to two hundred and forty reps in one month.
This amounts to two thousand eight hundred and eighty reps in one year.
All of which means, that to reach your goal of ten thousand reps it will take you almost four years.
That’s four years of constant practice to master just one technique!
When you think about the myriad techniques you are required to learn, you can start to see why it takes such a long time for anyone to reach the level of master in the martial arts.
Of course you can speed this process up by increasing your practice time or increasing the amount of reps you do in one session. Or you can choose to concentrate on simpler techniques like punches or kicks, techniques that are easier and less taxing to perform many times over (a hundred punches is easier done than a hundred throws).
One thing is clear though.
When it comes to mastering the martial arts, patience is definitely a virtue!
