I will always defend the use of the high kick, partly because I'm a traditionalist and partly because I love doing them. You bring up an interesting point about kicking in jeans. My club has had sessions in the past were we all trained in our street clothes to get used to the restrictions they put on your movements. It's very different from training in just the Gi but something I recommend getting used to.

very interesting article.
I was surprised to actually see a partial defense to the high kick because of the general dislike from the modern martial art world. Low kicks are indeed powerful but if one thinks about the high kicks power, with the greater distance the leg has to travel with the weight of the leg being a constant, I would say that the high kick might be stronger or have more of a force behind its coming.
I do agree that high kicks should not be used recklessly especially in a self defense situation. I myself have started to practice the thigh kick in order to widen my range of hitting skills. It took me years to learn how to kick at a moments notice in jeans too. =)

Exactly right S. Good leg health does make low kicking easier. If you can kick high then your low kicks will have more power in them, another benefit of practicing high kicks. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Couldn't agree more. Most MMA fighters are just not good at high kicking, partly because they don't train in them properly and generally just concentrate on low kicks and partly because most of them have no background other than MMA. High kicks take years to perfect as you say and there are a lot of factors encumbent on their success. A few sessions on the bag isn't going to achieve that.
