I agree that misperception is a serious threat and that such threats need to be addressed. At least now I do. I never gave it much thought before. The dojo has always been a very natural environment for me, free from the burgeoning constraints of the “real” world. I therefore never thought I would have to deal with such things. I'm not going to change the way I train and run things though. As I said in the article, if someone wants to be malicious then there is not much you can do to stop them. I guess we live in a different world these days. Sometimes that's hard to accept if you are used to things being a certain way. Like political correctness, a pet hate of mine. It has changed society for the worst as far as I'm concerned. But it's there and I guess you just have to accept it.

My comment is not addressed to you in particular.

I spent a few years working for the government, in a position that involved children. Our supervisor always warned us never to be caught alone with a child, for any reason--not for the child's protection, but for our own protection against the groundless charges of a deranged accuser. As you are no doubt aware, one is usually judged "guilty until proven innocent" in these situations.

In a Judo class you are obviously grappling all the time, and everyone who signs up understands that. Karate (to cite one example) is different, in public perception if not in the reality of close contact. Misperception is a serious threat, and threats need to be addressed. As always, the best defense is not being there.

I believe if you are a parent then it is up to you to check these people out before you send your kids to them. Combine that with the type of training you just mentioned and you cut down the liklihood of there being any problems.

My daughter's elementary school requires background checks for all adult volunteers. Adult volunteers are required to take a three hour workshop on how to be mindful and interact with children in a manner that protects both the children and the adults. This might be a good idea for anyone who works with children.

You have an excellent blog that has quickly become one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing your insights.

i would like to start by replying to the above comments, i have a child in the martial arts and i would have no objection in her grappling with someone who is qualified teacher or a student of the class under the supervision of a teacher, also these clubs take child off the street and help them to adjust in society in a much better way than children who grow up just running run the street.. and i am so glad someone has brought the matter up in a blog that a lot of people read, i would like to commend you Mr Martin in a very real way that you have taken something that you are passionate about and tried to share this with the world, and have done it in a way that many of us, ( at least half of my friends are hooked and wait in brace for your next articale to be posted) The comment left by Chris marital development has come across as being very childish and jealous ( maybe its because his own blog is not as good a read). i would like to express again keep up the good work and i will make sure i keep reading and logging onto you.
